From Amsterdam to Switzerland, this is what river cruising in Europe really looks like!
We've done a lot of traveling. We've stayed in extraordinary hotels, explored remote corners of the world, and experienced destinations in ways most people never get to. But there is something about river cruising in Europe that consistently stops us in our tracks and this Rhine journey on the Avalon Envision was no exception.
Over seven days, Our owners Misty and Shana sailed from Amsterdam through Germany and France, ending in Basel, Switzerland, documenting every stop along the way. Not the highlights reel. The real thing. The early mornings on the sun deck, the chocolate samples, the potato pancakes, the castle hikes, and yes, the dance floor at the end of the night.
This is the full recap, and we think it speaks for itself!
Day 1: Amsterdam + Zaanse Schans — Windmills, Cheese & Boarding Day
Before stepping foot on the ship, the trip started the right way with a half-day excursion to Zaanse Schans, a heritage village just outside Amsterdam where history isn't just preserved, it's still in motion.
We stepped inside a working windmill. Watched the gears turn, felt the structure move, and genuinely marveled at the fact that Dutch engineers were operating machinery like this centuries before electricity existed. It's one of those experiences that makes history feel less like a textbook and more like something you want to understand.
From there, a stop at a local cheese farm where we tasted several traditional Dutch varieties and learned how they're actually made followed by a demonstration from a master shoemaker crafting wooden clogs by hand. Touristy? Maybe. Genuinely fascinating Absolutely.
The sun came out. The Dutch countryside cooperated completely.
That afternoon, we checked into the Avalon Envision for the first time, and that's when the trip shifted into something else entirely. If you've never experienced a Panorama Suite on Avalon, add it to the list. The full wall of glass that opens to the river doesn't just offer a view it puts you inside the landscape. Dinner that first night was exceptional, the staff set the tone immediately, and we knew the week ahead was going to be something worth sharing.
Day 2: Nijmegen, Netherlands — First Port Stop
Nijmegen holds the title of the oldest city in the Netherlands, and it wore it well.
The day opened with an onboard yoga session a small detail, but one that captures what river cruising does differently. There's a rhythm to it. You wake up, the ship has moved, and a new city is outside your window. No airports. No transfers. Just arrival.
The guided walking tour through Nijmegen delivered exactly what you want from a European city: charming streets, deep history, and that unmistakable feeling of being somewhere that has mattered for a very long time. After the tour, there was time to explore independently shopping, wandering, the kind of afternoon where you're not rushing toward anything.
Back onboard, one of the highlights of river cruising revealed itself in a quiet but meaningful way: the daily port talk. Before each destination, guests gather for a briefing on where they're headed the history, what to look for, how to make the most of their time. Paired with happy hour (complete with thoughtfully crafted mocktails for those who prefer them), it's one of those details that elevates the experience beyond just getting from point A to point B.
Dinner that evening featured locally sourced ingredients picked up fresh in port a practice Avalon follows throughout the journey. The flavors reflected the region in the best way.
And then the DJ showed up and put every assumption about river cruising to rest. The dance floor was full. The energy was high. River cruising is many things quiet, scenic, refined but boring is not on the list.
Day 3: Cologne, Germany — Chocolate, Cathedrals & Potato Pancakes
Cologne had a lot to deliver, and it came through on all of it.
The morning began at a local chocolate factory, where the entire bean-to-bar process unfolded in front of us with samples at every stage. It was indulgent, educational, and genuinely one of the more fun excursion formats we've experienced.
The afternoon opened up into the city itself. Cologne's cathedral the Kölner Dom is one of those landmarks that actually earns its reputation. Standing at its base and looking up is a different experience than any photo can prepare you for. The Gothic architecture, the sheer scale, the way it dominates the skyline it's the kind of thing that makes you grateful you came.
Street-level Cologne delivered its own version of that. Traditional potato pancakes from a local spot, wandering through the city's mix of ancient and modern, a bit of shopping it was the kind of afternoon where you're not following an agenda, you're just in it.
Cologne is one of those stops that surprised us. Memorable, charming, and worth every minute.
Day 4: The Rhine Gorge + Johannisburg Castle + Schloss Burg — The Day That Had Everything
If we had to pick one day that defined what river cruising in Europe is capable of delivering, it might be this one.
The alarm went off early. By 7 AM, we were on the sun deck as the ship moved through the Rhine Gorge — one of the most dramatic stretches of the entire river. Bundled up, coffee in hand, watching castles appear on the hillsides on both sides of the water. It felt like sailing through a painting. At one point, someone looked around and said: this is why we do this.
A stop in the Jacuzzi with that backdrop? Yes. That happened.
The afternoon brought a wine and vineyard excursion at Johannisburg Castle. The tasting was excellent, the history behind the vineyard added real depth to the experience, and the setting a castle surrounded by vines above the Rhine was exactly what you come to this region hoping to find.
But the evening is what made the day unforgettable. A private evening tour of Schloss Burg Castle, reached by a steep climb that was absolutely worth it. Exploring those grounds with a small group, hearing the castle's history in an intimate setting as the light changed it was the kind of travel moment that you carry home with you.
Day 5: Heidelberg, Germany — Storybook City
Heidelberg is one of those places that looks exactly like you imagined it would, and somehow still exceeds expectations.
The morning was spent at Heidelberg Castle a beautifully preserved ruin perched above the city with panoramic views that stretch across the Neckar River valley. The guided tour walked through centuries of history while the scenery did the rest of the work.
After the tour, wine tasting and lunch, followed by free time to wander the Altstadt. Cobblestone streets, independent boutiques, the kind of atmosphere that makes you slow down naturally. And gelato, because of course.
The group made it back to the ship around 5:30 PM full, happy, and already looking forward to what was next.
One of the things we keep coming back to with river cruising is the balance it offers. Every day includes structured excursion options walking tours, biking routes, wine experiences, hiking but there's always space to go your own direction. That flexibility is something you genuinely feel, not just something that sounds good on a brochure.
Day 6: Strasbourg, France — Culture, Cuisine & a Night to Remember
Strasbourg felt like a full experience wrapped into a single day.
The morning tour led through the city and into La Petite France the old tanner's quarter, with its timber-framed houses, flower-lined canals, and the kind of charm that makes you understand why people fall in love with Alsace. After the tour, the afternoon was unscheduled: boutique shopping, local discoveries, the kind of slow wandering that produces the best travel memories.
Lunch was a standout. Following recommendations from a local guide, the meal featured authentic Alsatian flavors Munster cheese dishes, classic Cordon Bleu, and a crème brûlée that closed it out perfectly. A stop at a nearby farmers market added fresh bread, local honey, and a glimpse into the everyday rhythm of Strasbourg life.
That evening onboard was the gala night elevated dining, music, and the kind of atmosphere that forms real connections between people who started the week as strangers. The dance floor filled up again. The energy matched the week that came before it.
Strasbourg was exactly what river cruising promises: culture, cuisine, and connection, all in one day.
Day 7: The Black Forest, Germany — An Immersive Goodbye
The final full day took the group into the Black Forest, and it delivered something completely different from everything that came before it.
The excursion was centered around a traditional open-air museum a living, working collection of historic farmhouses and cultural sites that brought regional life from centuries past into full focus. This wasn't passive sightseeing. It was hands-on: learning traditional crafts, experiencing period clothing, and churning fresh butter from scratch (and yes, tasting it immediately after). Even the detail of traditional straw shoes the craftsmanship, the history behind them stuck with everyone.
Lunch was served on the museum grounds: a full traditional German spread, ending with Black Forest cake in the Black Forest. It sounds almost too perfect, and it was.
Back onboard the Avalon Envision, the evening was a genuine send-off. The crew, who had become familiar faces over seven days, gathered for a final celebration. Avalon's service throughout the week was consistently exceptional but it's the Panorama Suites that we keep coming back to. That wall of glass, the river always in view, the sense of being completely immersed in the journey it's a feature that elevates the entire experience in a way that's hard to replicate.

Final Thoughts: Why River Cruising Belongs on Your Radar
By the time the ship docked in Basel, Switzerland, the answer to every question we get about river cruising had been answered in real time, over seven days, on the water.
Is it worth it? Without question.
What makes it different? The access. You wake up in a new city every morning without a single transfer, bag check, or commute. You arrive in the heart of destinations that most travelers only pass through. The pace is unhurried but the itinerary is full. The ships are intimate. The service is personal. And the experiences from vineyard tastings above the Rhine to churning butter in the Black Forest feel genuinely curated rather than mass-produced.
River cruising in Europe isn't just a vacation. It's a way of experiencing a part of the world that rewards depth, and this itinerary delivers that at every port.
