There are trips you plan. And then there are trips that change the way you plan everything else. Our South Africa FAM trip was the latter.

Six Pixie Planners and our marketing director departed from Phoenix, Chicago, and Idaho, converging on one of the most extraordinary destinations on the African continent. The goal was simple and the same goal that drives every FAM trip we take: experience it firsthand so we can recommend it with real confidence.

What we came home with was so much more than notes on properties and lodges. We came home with memories we will not stop talking about, and a depth of knowledge that is now woven into every South Africa itinerary we build. Here is how the trip unfolded!

Day 1: The Travel Day

Long-haul travel to South Africa is not for the faint of heart, but it is absolutely worth every hour in the air. Those of us flying from Phoenix kicked things off with a 10-hour flight to London Heathrow, where we had a lengthy layover. For the first time, we opted for a day room connected directly to Terminal 5, and we will never do a long-haul layover any other way. Real rest, a proper shower, and you arrive at your next flight actually feeling ready. Noted, and already recommending.

Another 10-hour flight brought us into Johannesburg just after sunrise. We checked into a stunning boutique hotel just outside the city. From the welcome to the food to the attention to every small detail, the tone was set immediately.

After freshening up, we headed into Johannesburg for a guided city tour, including a meaningful visit to the Mandela house. Back at the hotel, there was time for a spa treatment before dinner with the hotel manager genuinely one of the best meals any of us could remember having.

Early morning the next day. Game drives on the horizon.

Day 2: Into the Bush

After a beautiful breakfast in Johannesburg, we caught a short flight to Hoedspruit and made our way to our first lodge. We had not even left the airport before the wildlife started. Giraffes and zebras right outside the window.

Arriving at the lodge was a full moment. The setting is breathtaking in a way that photographs simply cannot capture. Staff greeted us by name, introduced themselves individually, and had cold towels and welcome drinks waiting. Our accommodations were tented suites overlooking the water, which, as it turned out, had hippos living in it.

We headed straight out for our first game drive that afternoon. Our guides were exceptional. Knowledgeable, attentive, and mid-drive they arranged a full bush setup with drinks and snacks. We stayed out past sundown to spot nocturnal animals, then returned to an incredible lodge dinner where nearly everything is included: food, drinks, alcohol, game drives. The value at this level of property is truly unlike anything else.

Day 3: The Big Five

We were woken up by a hippo. A full, guttural bellow right outside our tented suite. Best alarm clock of the trip.

Morning game drive through the mist. A female lion spotted before breakfast. Coffee in the bush while hippos provided the soundtrack. Then back to the lodge for what we unanimously agreed was the best bacon any of us had ever eaten.

The evening, though, is what none of us will forget. We told our driver we still had two Big Five animals on the list. He nodded. Challenge accepted!

Sundowners in the bush with a full bar. The sky turning every shade of gold. Then the driver started slowing. Slower. Stopped. A leopard walked directly under our vehicle. In person. In its natural habitat. Breathtaking does not cover it.

As the sun fully disappeared, we came upon a family of lions. Four males, several females. Moving through the bush like they owned it. Because they do.

We ended the night at a new lodge, with crocodile on the menu and every item ticked off the Big Five list!

Day 4: Jabulani and the Elephant Experience

We made the intentional call to skip the morning drive and rest before what we knew would be a full day. Our final Kruger stop was the one we had been most excited about: Jabulani, a lodge built entirely around animal rescue with a deep focus on elephants.

We dove into every experience offered. Elephant swim time, where the herd comes down like clockwork to play and roll in the mud. Elephant feeding, where we met three very special residents up close. And then we checked in to find we had been given a three-bedroom villa that stands as one of the most extraordinary rooms any of us have ever stayed in.

The Elephant Sundowner. There are no adequate words. Cocktails in the golden-hour bush, surrounded by elephants in their natural habitat. The kind of moment that stops your breath.

Night drive. Then dinner in a traditional Boma, open fire, incredible food, our group laughing and tearing up simultaneously in genuine gratitude. We ended the night with a villa party that lasted exactly 30 minutes before we were all asleep.

Day 5: Safari to City — Arriving in Cape Town

Leaving the Kruger region is never easy. But Cape Town was waiting.

A two-hour flight landed us in one of the most vibrant and charming cities any of us had visited in a long time. Our first stop was a site tour of The Silo Hotel, which is exactly as extraordinary as you have heard. The art collection, the architectural history of the building, the rooftop bar, the rooms. This is a property that belongs on your radar.

That evening we had dinner at Ongetem, Chef Bertus Basson’s restaurant inside the Canopy by Hilton Cape Town Longkloof. The name means “untamed” in Afrikaans. The food delivered on every level of that name. We had the privilege of meeting Chef Basson personally, and the meal ranked among the best of the entire trip.

Day 6: The Cape Peninsula

Table Mountain. Boulder Beach penguins. The southwestern most point of Africa.

Our day started with a cable car ride to the top of Table Mountain, the kind of experience that explains why Cape Town consistently ranks among the most beautiful cities in the world. A scenic coastal drive led us to a charming farmers market village for lunch, then on to Boulder Beach to spend time with the African penguin in its natural habitat.

We closed the day at the point where the Atlantic and Indian Oceans meet. A moment that puts the scale of the world in perspective in the best possible way.

Day 7: Wine Country

Morning shopping at Cape Town’s waterfront before heading into the vineyard region. We toured a stunning resort property that our clients are going to love, had what stood out as the finest meal of the entire trip, and returned to enjoy a private wine tasting while some of the group explored Cape Town’s local scene.

Then an early night, because the next morning had sharks on the schedule.

Day 8: Shark Cage Diving and Grootbos — We Saved the Best for Last

The final day started before sunrise and ended in a private wine cellar. Everything in between was extraordinary.

Shark cage diving in Gansbaai. Face to face with sharks, sea lions, a massive stingray, and a surprise appearance by a humpback whale. The kind of morning that reminds you why we do this work.

From there, we made our way to Grootbos Private Nature Reserve. National Geographic Unique Lodges of the World. Condé Nast Green List. Tatler’s 101 Best Hotels in the World. Set on over 3,500 hectares of pristine wilderness overlooking Walker Bay, Grootbos earned every accolade. The freestanding suites with private decks and outdoor showers. The flower safari through ancient fynbos and milkwood forests. The Florilegium museum. And the private wine cellar dinner hosted by the owner himself.

A perfect finale to an unforgettable trip!

The Takeaway

South Africa is not just a destination. It is an experience that changes how you see the world, and how you travel in it. Every property we visited, every experience we had, every meal we sat down to was a reminder of why we go before we recommend.

If South Africa is on your list, we have been there. We know the properties, the lodges, the moments that make the difference. We will build you something extraordinary!
