River Cruise on the Danube: 8 Days, 4 Countries, and a New Travel Obsession

Home, unpacked, and still dreaming about this trip. We spent eight days aboard the Riverside Mozart sailing the Danube through Austria, Germany, and the Czech Republic, and have not stopped talking about it since. We went in expecting a nice cruise, came home with a genuine love for river cruising, a phone full of thousands of photos, and a group of new friends I already miss.

We were on board as part of a social media FAM ("familiarization trip", basically, an opportunity to experience everything firsthand) with The Social Passport. We got to dive deep into everything Riverside, and we can't wait to share it all with you.

Before we get into the day-by-day, let's talk about the ship itself. The Riverside Mozart is beautiful, from the top to the bottom. The restaurants and the common areas were so inviting and felt luxurious.

Our room was even better, the beds were so comfortable, nice closet space to unpack, and the views from our Juliette balcony beautiful! Every single staff member we talked to was so nice, and you could tell they genuinely loved what they do. The food onboard was amazing, and you could tell the chef takes so much pride in every single detail.

A couple of our guests had food allergies and sensitivities, and from the chef to the servers, everyone was aware and made sure there were always alternate options ready to go. From the big things to the little things, Riverside River Cruises gets it right.

On to the trip; it started the way we wish every trip could start: slow and easy. We had a relaxed morning in Vienna before Riverside transfers picked us up around noon and whisked us to the port. Seamless! They greeted us with cold towels and a glass of champagne, handed us our room keys, and then the surprise: our room had been upgraded to a French Balcony!

After lots of pictures and a video room tour (because obviously), we headed to lunch, and wow, Riverside has the buffet figured out. Fresh-cooked pasta made to order, gorgeous salads and sides, it was better than any buffet I've ever had. The afternoon was all about exploring the ship, a quick stroll off the boat, and unpacking before the safety briefing and our first port talk. The port talks turned out to be such a great way to meet the crew, hear what's ahead for the next day, and talk with the other guests on board.

For dinner some of us had our very first schnitzel (an Austrian must!), and wow, it was soooo good, paired with incredible wine and great conversation with the other travel advisors, what a great way to start. It was the perfect relaxed first day to settle in before all the adventures ahead.

Our first full day on board did not disappoint. Europe was in the middle of an extreme heat wave while we were there, so a slow morning with room service and a little work before our first excursion, "Panoramic Vienna," was exactly the right call. We did a walking tour around St. Stephen's Cathedral with free time to explore and shop. (Tip: My personal fan was an absolute lifesaver while touring, never travel to Europe in summer without one!) Back on the ship for lunch, the air conditioning felt amazing, and honestly, the food impressed me every single day of this trip.

That afternoon was our first official social media training with Kyla Daisy Morris of The Social Passport, and it was so good. By the early afternoon the crew already knew our names AND what we liked to drink at each meal. We'd walk in and they'd already be heading our way with our favorites. That's the magic of a small ship, the service feels personal because it truly is. We wrapped the evening with the port talk, another incredible dinner, and the best surprise: watching Austria play Argentina in the World Cup while IN Austria.

From there we sailed to Dürnstein for a morning hike to a castle, then time to wander the town, shop, and taste the local specialties, apricot liqueur, chocolate, and jam. Sooo good. This region is famous for its apricots, and now I understand why. We had lunch on board while sailing to Weissenkirchen, where we did a walking tour with a wine tasting. Hearing the stories behind the wine, straight from the people who put so much love into their craft, made the whole thing even better. That night, dinner was hosted at Atelier, the ship's specialty dining experience featuring Hungarian and Austrian small plates to share. WOW. The food was truly amazing and it just kept coming and coming, and then they brought even more. Such a great time talking and laughing with everyone, though we were all very full and ready to relax on the top deck for a few minutes before getting ready for the next day.

Riverside offers multiple excursion options for each day. You get to choose how you want to spend each day. On day 4, many of us chose the one that took us into a whole different country: the Czech Republic. We spent the day in Český Krumlov, a true fairytale town where every single corner is a picture-perfect scene. We had time to explore, walk the winding streets, shop, and grab lunch. After lunch, some of the group went shopping... and some of us (yes, me) headed to the local brewery for a tour and tasting. And let me tell you, these were not little sample pours, we are talking full pints of different Czech beers. It was a ten-hour day, but 100% worth every minute.

We said goodbye to Austria that night and woke up in a whole new country: Germany. We absolutely love that you can visit multiple countries and don't have to pack and unpack! We started with a short walk in Passau, the "City of Three Rivers," and our first beer tasting, then dove into a city tour with stops for drinks and little bites along the way at local, family-owned spots. Amazing doesn't even cover it. Last tasting stop was chocolate (yum), and then came the total surprise: an organ concert at St. Stephen's Cathedral, not just any organ, the LARGEST cathedral organ in the world, 17,974 pipes. The sound was pure magic, chills the entire time. I love that Riverside builds these surprises into their excursions. You genuinely never know what's coming.

Back on the ship (and finally cooled off from the heat wave), it was on to social media editing training with Kyla, who really is amazing at what she does, we all learned so much. Then dinner and another incredible night with my fellow advisors.

Our next day started slow, with some downtime to recharge, followed by a special evening of dancing with a waltz performance and class onboard. Then it was off to Melk for the Melk Abbey excursion, and this one stuck with me. Our guide gave us so much information, and you could feel her passion and love for what she does in every word. Walking through that Abbey, knowing we couldn't take a single photo, just made us slow down and actually soak it in. No screens, no distractions, just us being fully present in this beautiful, centuries-old place. Moments like that are why I love travel.

Back on the ship, a surprise was waiting: dinner on the top deck at sunset. The views were stunning, the food was incredible as always, truly one of the best nights of the trip... until it wasn't. I stepped away mid-dinner to grab my glass of port for a quick pic and a sip, when I felt a sharp sting. OMG! I got stung in the mouth by a bee! (You can actually see it in the picture, and nope, I did not see it coming.) It hurt so bad I didn't even stop to take more pics. Ended my night a bit earlier than planned, but good news, no allergy and only a little swelling. Still hurt like crazy though! This trip had exceeded every single expectation, and I was already so sad to see the end coming.

Our last full day, there was no need to rush that morning, so I was able to wake up, get room service, and get some work done. The day was spa treatments, lunch on the top deck, a little more work, and again another amazing dinner, all leading up to Riverside's signature event. That evening we had a private VIP evening at Belvedere Palace! It started with a tour of the palace, and standing in person in front of Gustav Klimt's "The Kiss," his unfinished portrait of Amalie Zuckerkandl, and pieces from Monet's collection, seeing masterpieces like that up close, without the crowds, is not something you forget. The evening ended with a private orchestra concert, just for us. This was truly amazing, and the best way to end our cruise.

We headed back to the ship for a farewell drink with everyone on our last night together. There's something about that final night of a trip, surrounded by people who were strangers a week earlier and now feel like friends, that hits differently every time. Our last morning was breakfast, packing up, and a genuinely sad drive to the airport. I seriously considered booking another sailing back to back — I mean, I was already there, right? I came home with new friends, a camera roll I'll be going through for months, and a love for river cruising I did not see coming.
